Why I Go To Garage Sales

Lots of my friends and family ask me why I religiously go to garage sales and flea markets with my mother every Saturday from early spring until late fall. They always say “Aren’t people just selling their old junk? Why would you want that?!?!”

While that is true sometimes, the majority of the time, I am able to find things that I’ve been looking for — CDs, computer stuff, clothes (yes, I buy clothes at garage sales!) and other assorted things. The best part of going out each Saturday morning, however, is spending time with my mom.

Sometimes I find a “gem” — that is, something that I buy very cheaply and keep it knowing that I got such a bargain, or that I sell via eBay — like the $15 HP Jornada PDA that I sold for $190 or the $10 laptop that I sold for $200. After reading this story about a Velvet Underground album bought at a flea market that sold for $150K, I will definitely continue to go to these sales for a very long time!
