Using Someone Else’s DNS

Everyone uses the Domain Name System (DNS) to use the Internet. We have to — because if we didn’t — then the Internet wouldn’t work at all! Most people just use the settings that their Internet Service Provider (ISP) gives to them to connect to this system. Interestingly, there have been a few companies that have sprung up offering to give consumers and businesses an alternative to their ISP’s DNS servers.

I started using OpenDNS a few months ago and have been happy with it. I noticed a small (but not huge) change in my connectivity, so I think I’m gonna keep using it. I recently found out about ScrubIT because I was doing some research on content filtering for a client of mine that was having a problem with an employee doing some questionable web surfing at his store. This is one way that a consumer or business can control their web usage without any major investment or configuration of multiple computers. There are also programs like SpectorPro that business owners can use to track each and everything that their employees are doing. It’s a shame, but sometimes it needs to be done in order to protect your company and its interests.
