Rolling Over In His Grave

First off, I’m man enough to admit that I watch American Idol. I’ve always enjoyed music and singing and I’ve always found the show to be entertaining — although I truly think that Paula Abdul is a complete and utter nitwit. She cannot be critical of anyone at all — which makes her opinions insignificant since she cannot be objective in her ratings of the singers.

This weeks’s “theme” was Queen, so each of the singers had to select a Queen song and then perform it. Most of my friends know that Queen is my favorite band of all time, so I was really excited to hear what songs the final 8 contestants selected and how well they’d perform them.

Like the title of this posting says, I can bet that Freddie Mercury was rolling over in his grave while the performances were going on. Most of the singers passed up fantastic songs like “Love of My Life”, “Kind of Magic”, “I Want To Break Free”, “We Are The Champions”, “You Take My Breath Away” and so many more. The most disappointing singer was Chris Daughtry who has been looking like the favorite for most of the competition. He chose to sing “Innuendo” — which is one of my least favorite Queen songs. They showed him talking to Brian May and Roger Taylor about his song choice and Brian said “we’ve never played that one live before”.

You would think that would be a sign to Chris to select another song since the band that created the song has never performed it live in over 30 years, but he didn’t get the hint. As Simon said after his performance, Chris had the opportunity to showcase his voice and talents with any number of fantastic Queen songs, but he chose an obscure song that most people have never even heard of. I think Chris did a bad job of it.

In fact, the only person’s performance that I did like was Elliott Yamin’s version of “Somebody To Love”, but once again, he was passed over by the judges who didn’t seem impressed with it. I was really expecting more from the show for this “theme”, and I was definitely disappointed. The folks that pick the themes for this show should consider some other bands next time since the contestants clearly didn’t know what to do or what songs to select.
