Plain Layne and the power of the Internet
At least once a week, I check out the web log of Jason Kottke, a web developer from NYC. I found his site a few years back and have always been interested in the links that he posts and his background as a web developer.
I recently read this post where Jason talks about reading a web log from a 26 year old girl. He stated that he had followed it for quite a while and found it to be very interesting — basically like a soap opera on the web.
The best part of this web log is that Plain Layne, the woman at the center of the log is actually 34 year old male lawyer from Minnesota who created this imaginary woman and wrote about her mythical life. At it’s highest popularity, Plain Layne was drawing 10,000 visitors a day to her site. Amazing!
The Internet has enabled so many things — some good, some bad. Although some people might be angry that Plain Layne doesn’t exist, I think it is great to hear that this man was able to write so well as to fool 300,000 people a month into thinking that they were really reading about Plain Layne and her life. I think it shows how truly talented this guy is.
