Mt. Lebanon Wins Solicitation Challenge
I got some great news today. The American Civil Liberties union was suing my town — Mt. Lebanon — because we require political canvassers to register with the municipality before going door-to-door. The ACLU said that it wasn’t fair because it is the canvassers “free speech” to do this. Mt. Lebanon said that it was a public safety risk (which it is!). Mt. Lebanon won in U.S. District Court (woo hoo!) and the ACLU said they will appeal (of course).
Do you want to know why I am so happy about this? I’ll tell you. Earlier this summer, I was getting ready for work when a young girl — who didn’t look any older than 16 — came to my door and told me that she wanted to “practice her communication skills”. I didn’t now what the heck she meant by it and she looked totally strung out on drugs, so I told her that I wasn’t interested and that I had to leave. She said “Please…I just need a few minutes of your time.” I said “No, thank you” and closed the door.
Once I locked the door, and watched her walk back to the street, I called 911 and explained what happened. About 2 minutes later, a police car pulled up in front of my neighbor’s house. I saw the officer get out and approach her. They walked back to his car and after about 5 minutes of talking, she was arrested. I later found out that she was with a group from Tennessee and was transported here to rip people off by selling them over-inflated magazine subscriptions and then immediately cash their checks and never submit the order.
I am glad that they arrested her (and all of the other people they picked up!). People that are respectable and have something genuine to sell or an idea to push should have no problem registering with my town so that people like me will trust that they have been checked out before they even approach my home. Thank you Mt. Lebanon for putting a policy in place to help protect the residents of your town..
