More Than Colorado
Did you know that there are more firefighters in Allegheny County, PA than in the entire state of Colorado? Surprised? Maybe. But any of us in the fire service in Pennsylvania know that there are way too many fire companies in our state. We’ve known this for a while, but the report from the state Legislative Budget and Finance Committee proves the point.
In their 156 page report, they urge the volunteer companies to share resources, promote regional partnerships and, in some cases, consolidate two or more small departments into larger ones.
Good luck trying to get that to happen in Pennsylvania — especially in towns that have 5-7 fire companies for one town! I respect my brother and sister firefighters for the work they do, but the fire service within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania really needs to take a hard look at this or we will continue to have fire companies that are struggling or who will cease to exist. Public safety has always got to be the number one concern, not trying to maintain a department that runs a few calls a month. It is those companies that need to consolidate to save money and remain viable.
