Google Desktop and SMS
Like most people, I’ve been using Google as my main search engine for years. Before Google, I used to use Yahoo for all of my searching. I’ve had a Yahoo Mail account for years and continue to use it for all of my group memberships (via Yahoo Groups of course). I recently started heading closer to Yahoo away from Google when I saw the “Sync” option that Yahoo offers (through Intellisync) to sync up my Yahoo Calendar with my Outlook address book, calendar and notes on my work laptop.
Today, I was checking out Jason Kottke’s weblog and I read some interesting news about Google:
Number 1: Google Desktop — You install this program on your computer in order to search your hard drive for emails, text, IM messages, etc. If you don’t mind knowing that there is an application tracking your web browsing and documents, etc. — then this is a very cool program. Be careful that you don’t mess with the settings or you could let anyone in the world search your hard drive.
Number 2: Google SMS — You can send a text message — if your phone is SMS-enabled (mine is..Yeah!) — to 46645 and then put in whatever search term you want. I used “pizza 15228″ and sent the message. 10 seconds later I got 2 text messages back to my phone with a total of three pizza shops within 2 miles of my house. I could really see this being a very helpful tool if you are somewhere and you need to find something in that area.
So….as of today….I am leaning back to Google as my favorite “use every day” tool.
