Gender Determination In India
I had a conversation via instant messenger today with my friend Ravi regarding our families, work, etc. He asked about how my wife was doing with her pregnancy and if we had found out the gender of our child.
I told him that we did not find out because we wanted it to be a surprise. He then proceeded to tell me that it is illegal in India to find out the gender of your baby before birth. He said that it’s a law that they have had for a long time because boys are preferred in Indian society. According to Ravi, the government is afraid that if people find out the gender — and find out that it’s female — that they will abort the child.
It’s amazing how different our cultures are with regards to “finding out the sex”. Most people here in the US find out to get their child’s room ready and start picking names. I would’ve never even thought about it in the way that Ravi said that Indians do.
