Double Dose of Death

I visited the funeral home today to pay my respects to Dr. Lawrence Dunegan who was my pediatrician throughout my childhood. He was a wonderful, warm Christian man who truly loved children and devoted his life to their care. It was heartbreaking to hear of his death — especially since I have become good friends with his son Matt since my college years. I can’t even imagine what Matt has been going through since he has lost his father. I dread the day that my parents are no longer with us. It creates such a terrible and empty feeling that I hate to ever think about it even though I know that we all die and move onto a better place.

It was sad enough to be at the funeral home for Dr. Dunegan, but when I was there, I saw my friend Dennis Young who used to be a firefighter in my department. He has since moved away to Ohio, so I was shocked to see him at the funeral home. I wasn’t sure why he was there until I looked at the sign and saw his mother’s name. I was dumbfounded, considering that he had only lost his father two years ago. I took the time to talk to him and his family and paid my respects.

This was the first time that I have ever been to a funeral home for two people in the same day or week. It makes it even harder to deal with because each person that passed was a parent to a friend. Matt and Dennis will be in my thoughts and prayers as they deal with these terrible losses.
