Cause For Alarm
MSNBC recently did a two-part series on the problems with PASS alarms, the devices that I and my fellow firefighters wear in case we become unconscious and/or cannot move. These devices are supposed to emit a very high pitched wail and flash a bright light so that I can be found by a rapid intervention team.
Unfortunately, as you’ll read in the MSNBC report, the Centers for Disease Control — which is the federal agency that is supposed to investigate firefighter deaths — did not act upon problems with these devices until 5 years after they were reported. This report has angered a lot of people and it is causing a ripple effect through the fire service and Congress as well. I’m simply amazed (and disturbed) at what is in this report.
