More Babies, Less Caskets

It is never good when your city has more people dying in it than are being born. I know we’ve had the “brain drain” for a long time, but this is definitely not good news for my hometown. It feels like a one-town punch after finding out that we’re the “sootiest” city in the country now.

We’re Number 1

For the first time in 22 years — Pittsburgh has been rated as the most livable city in the country by Rand McNally. I don’t know how much being ranked like this actually helps drives home sales, economic development, etc. — but it’s nice to get the recognition.

The really cool thing about this, however, is that Pittsburgh is the first city to repeat in the history of the rankings. Take that!

Philip Murray Bridge

Names like 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th Street Bridges are not cool. Recognizing the first president of the United Steelworkers, however, is very cool. As the article says, Philip Murray isn’t a household name in Pittsburgh — but he should be. Steel built Pittsburgh — and a lot of our country!. The USW has represented steelworkers since the 1940’s, so I think it’s great that we’re naming the bridge after Philip.

Damn Right We’re Underrated!

I’ve never head of ShermansTravel.com before, but I like them already! They rated Pittsburgh as one of the top 10 underrated cities in the US. I’m glad that they made a point of saying “forget Pittsburgh’s reputation for smokestacks and steel” since there are still people out there that think we’re some dark, dingy town. We’ve come a long way since then and it’s nice to see people recognize that for once. I think I’ll go drink an Iron City to celebrate! No…just kidding about the Iron City. I’ll have a Penn Pilsner instead.

Pittsburgh Skyline

I just recently found PittsburghSkyline.com and I gotta say that it has some of the best pictures of my beloved town on it. He’s got all kinds of cool shots on the site — like the bridges and city from different angles, the various neighborhoods around town and some of my fellow Burghers. This is especially a great site for people that have moved away and want to be reminded of how pretty our town really is.

How Pittsburgh Are You?

Found this great little quiz thanks to a post on one of my daily reads — The Burgh Blog.  I scored 100% — and I’d be damn embarrased if I didn’t.  Take the quiz yourself, then come back here and leave a comment with your score.
